It should have been me.
The thought kept running through his head as he was checked over by the paramedics, as he was subjected to IAB's polygraph, as he ran the trace evidence that eventually led them to the missing cocaine, as he attended Hollis' funeral. He almost voiced it aloud when speaking to Hollis' parents and widow, but checked himself at the last minute.
It should have been me.
It was only fair, right? Hollis had a wife and a kid, a family. Tim hadn't spoken to his folks since he'd left Syracuse all those years ago to "find himself", and he'd never been all that close to his kid brother. Hollis was a good officer with a clean record. Tim was too lazy to properly care for his gun.
It should have been me.
And now, eighteen months later, it was.
